What Is a Chalazion (Eyelid Cyst)?

If you've noticed a firm, round, and typically painless swelling on your eyelid, there's a high chance you're dealing with what’s medically known as a “chalazion.” While commonly confused with a stye, a chalazion is a distinct condition that requires its own approach. So, what exactly is an eyelid cyst or chalazion?

A chalazion is a non-infectious cyst that forms due to a blockage in the meibomian glands—oil-secreting glands located within the eyelids. These glands help produce the oily layer of the tear film, which protects the eye surface. When their ducts become blocked, the oil builds up under the skin and forms a localized, hard lump known as a chalazion.

Chalazia are usually painless and grow slowly over time. They can appear on both the upper and lower eyelids. In the early stages, mild redness or tenderness may be present, but the pain typically subsides, leaving a noticeable bump that may become cosmetically bothersome or, in some cases, interfere with vision.

I, Op. Dr. Yıldız Acar Ebcim, begin treatment with warm compresses and antibiotic eye drops. If the lesion does not resolve naturally or becomes aesthetically concerning, I perform minor surgical procedures to remove the cyst. In recurring cases, I also evaluate for underlying skin conditions that may contribute to its persistence.
