What Causes a Chalazion? Understanding Eyelid Cysts

If you've noticed a firm, usually painless lump gradually appearing on your eyelid, it's most likely a chalazion. While it may seem purely cosmetic, this condition is often noticeable and can affect your appearance. So, what actually causes a chalazion? What mechanism leads to the formation of this eyelid cyst?

A chalazion develops when the meibomian glands in the eyelid become blocked. These glands are responsible for producing the oily layer of the tear film that keeps the eye surface moist. When their channels are obstructed, the oil cannot be released and begins to accumulate under the skin. Over time, this buildup forms a firm, non-infectious lump — the chalazion.

Many factors can contribute to this blockage. Poor eyelid hygiene, not properly removing eye makeup, prolonged contact lens use, oily skin types, and seasonal allergies can all disrupt gland function and create the ideal conditions for a chalazion to form.

In addition, chronic blepharitis (eyelid inflammation), rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, and oily eczema are skin conditions that may trigger or worsen this issue. Periods of weakened immunity or high stress can also negatively affect eyelid health. In individuals who experience frequent chalazia, underlying chronic or systemic causes must be thoroughly evaluated.
