What Is a Chalazion? A Silent Guest on Your Eyelid
Often mistaken for a stye, a chalazion is one of the most common—but frequently misunderstood—lumps that can form on the eyelid. While usually painless, its presence can be both aesthetically and functionally concerning. So, what exactly is a chalazion?
A chalazion is a non-infectious cyst that forms due to blockage of the meibomian glands located in the eyelids. These glands produce the oily component of the tear film that helps keep the eye surface moist. When these ducts are blocked, oil accumulates, forming a lump that can harden over time and cause a noticeable swelling in the eyelid.
Chalazia are typically painless and grow slowly. Depending on their size, they may become visually disturbing or even slightly alter the shape of the eyelid—occasionally affecting the visual field. While some resolve on their own, persistent or recurrent cases may require medical intervention.
Treatment usually begins with warm compresses and topical antibiotic drops or ointments. In resistant cases, a minor surgical procedure may be performed to drain the contents. If chalazia occur frequently, underlying conditions such as chronic blepharitis or rosacea should also be evaluated.
