What Is Chalazion Disease? The Silent Guest on Your Eyelid

If you've noticed a slowly developing, generally painless but visually disturbing lump on your eyelid, chances are you’re dealing with chalazion disease. As one of the most common eyelid lesions, a chalazion not only alters your aesthetic appearance but may also cause persistent discomfort if left untreated. So, what exactly is chalazion disease and how does it form?

A chalazion is a non-infectious cyst that develops when one of the meibomian glands in the eyelid becomes blocked. These glands are responsible for producing the oily layer of your tear film, which keeps the eye surface moisturized. When a gland is blocked, the trapped oil collects beneath the skin, forming a firm, round, and mobile lump over time.

Unlike a stye, which is typically painful and caused by infection, a chalazion is chronic and usually painless. However, if it grows large enough, it may press against the eye and impair vision. It’s important not to confuse the two, as each requires a different treatment approach.

Treatment depends on the size and duration of the chalazion. Initial methods may include warm compresses, antibiotic eye drops, or topical ointments. If the lump doesn’t resolve on its own, a minor surgical procedure performed under local anesthesia may be necessary. This surgery is quick, generally leaves no scar, and offers fast recovery.

I, Op. Dr. Yıldız Acar Ebcim, approach chalazion disease not just as a physical lump, but as a condition that affects overall eyelid health. I develop customized, lasting treatment plans for each patient. In recurrent cases, I also investigate underlying skin or systemic conditions that may be contributing to the problem.
